The work of this series is a direct representation of the spirit, vitality and natural beauty of our Manitoban landscape; painting from life is a distillation of time. A capturing of the essence of existence during a specific moment in the artist’s experience, an experience that constantly evolves.
I am especially interested in the duality between perceptions of reality in the moment v.s the alternate reality our sensory memory creates in recollection of that same moment. With this series I aim to break free from the four walls of my studio and experience the act of painting whilst immersed in the environment of my subject matter; 'En Plein Air” meaning ‘In the open air”.
The paintings of this series are fresh off the easel, all created within the last three months. They seek to explore the above notions using a combination of Plein air painting practice, to provide contrast against the paintings re-constructed purely from memory as I attempt to paint the “essential character” of things.
